A cold front went through and broke the hot spell we have been having, so it was actually a cool night. I stayed with the lead group for about half the ride. I have to learn not to expend all my energy trying to keep up on the hills or rollers in this case.

My goal for this ride was to climb the two steepest hills in the county, Moonhill Rd. and Church Hill Rd. As the weather turned I only completed the first, the average grade of which is 13 %, with sections reaching as steep as 19%. For almost the whole ride I felt like I was out of gas and was very surprised to learn that I had ridden 27 miles. The climb, although only 0.7 miles, took around 15 minutes to finish. Coming down with brakes full on I could barely keep below 25 MPH and descended in less than a minute.

This was supposed to be a stage race but was reduced to only the road race portion due to uncooperative public officials. I finished 14th out of 18 finishers. I was first in my age group. Not being fully recovered from my crashes is what I will blame my poor performance in this race on. Although I am not all that disappointed with my average speed. When I got dropped I just switched to time-trial mode to minimize my losses.

I showed up late to this ride and there were so many riders that there were no maps left. So I set out on a loop that ended up being about 22 miles. I finished pretty much at the same time as everyone else who had done the planned 30 mile ride.

This TT consisted of a 2-man team. I picked a partner who was consistently about 2 minutes slower than I. Consequently the effort served only to slow me down. Also I had two crashes (my first two and only two since I’ve had my Cannondale). The first was due to going over railroad tracks at the wrong angle. The second was due to me misjudging the turn.
